Our World Has Changed Dramatically in the Past Century

The past century has seen a scientific and technological revolution built on four centuries of Renaissance and Enlightenment science since 1500. These revolutions are now expanding exponentially. Take, for example, the Internet, free global video calls, hyper-fast travel, the renewable energy explosion, and the development and rollout of a global vaccine in less than a year. When the Spanish flu took 50 million lives a century ago, the death toll was 1 person in 25. Although still tragic, covid19’s death toll today is 130 times less, 1 person in 3250 lives.

In January 2021, 4.66 billion people around the world used the internet — that’s 60 percent of people alive today! The number of people using the internet is now 2.4 times greater than the 1.95 billion people alive in 1921.

In 1921 the fastest plane flew at 209 km/hr. Today the Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft has a top speed of 3,530 km/hr and NASA’s Juno spacecraft approached Jupiter at 365,000 km/h.
