Breakthroughs in Enhancing the Performance of Any Team
In my last article: “What Makes a Great Team?”, I explained teams from an evolutionary perspective, which gave us powerful insights into the evolutionary and psychological dynamics that form our social glue, create desirable futures and solve problems from the simple to the ultra-complex. In this article, we’ll dig deeper into how to enhance the performance of any team you participate in or lead.
Three criteria are useful in evaluating team effectiveness: output, collaborative ability, and members’ individual development. What can you do to enhance the performance of the team you’re working in or leading, based on those criteria?
Task/Mission/Role Match- First, identify the match between the team task/mission and the capabilities of each team member to perform the roles needed to successfully fulfill the requirements of the task/mission.
Developmental Fit- Second, understand where each member of the team is at developmentally, and help each team member understand what this means for their own development and membership in the team.
Capacity for Change- Third, evaluate the capacity for change, innovation, and transformation in each team member and the team in general, as well as the fit between the size of the task/mission and the capacities of the team.
Let’s tackle each of these in turn.
