I’m halfway through clearing out my 5 filing cabinets in anticipation of our imminent downsizing and my retirement. Occasionally I come across some gems that take me back to a very specific time and place, where I was excited enough to generate an enduring memory of the moment.

I’m something of a hybrid- I’ve been an entrepreneur, senior executive, strategic advisor and professor working with CXOs at business schools and being a Fellow at various institutes, especially complexity science and integral science and philosophy. One of my passions has always been understanding how life and humans emerged and how we ended up creating the most complex entities and technologies in the space of a few hundred years out of the cradle of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment.

On this journey, I discovered catastrophe theory, fractals, chaos theory, complexity science, and cognitive science, along with a fascination for physics and biology. We’ve come a very long way over the past three decades in our understanding of these phenomena, but we also still have a very long way to go.

This journey also led me to share various rooms with a variety of Nobel Prize laureates, and thousands of absolutely brilliant minds. These included Brian Josephson of “Josephson Junction” fame (quantum tunneling in superconductors and gallium arsenide chips), who was and remains a mad professor type whose mind reaches places few others can.
